I thought it might be a granulated sax or clarinet (“granulated” is my word of the day – I have no idea whether that’s what you did or not. This is the trouble I get into when I start googling at work). I like reading about synthesizers, but I can’t seem to work up the energy to synthesize anything.

It is all MIDI, which is a sort of computer synthesizer thing (except the vocals obviously). The sound you are talking about is supposed to be a muted trumpet but it doesn’t really sound like one does it?

What is the sound I hear sampled over the main theme (which is mixed up more, near the end)? Is that a reed instrument of some kind?

Highly funky. Reminds of the cool tunes that used to be sung on the kids’ show “The Electric Company” in the US back in the 1970s (many of which contained equally subversive messages).

I am really happy to find this page like every one else am amazed that the world doesn’t know of Patrik Fitz I have known that name for 30 years and have really enjoyed hearing the album again as my tape wore out b4 CD’s were invented so your MP3′s are so cool and have now been posted to my facebook page for all my m8′s to listen to as most of them are fans!!

Thanks. I’ll check out the song at work (too slow of a connection at home).

But. . . weirdly coincidentally. . . about a month ago, I started following Thomas Dolby on Twitter (I always kind of liked him but had no idea what he had been doing for twenty-plus years). His new song “Oceanea” has a sweet, serene riff running through it – now I discover it is Kevin Armstrong (and that he played on TD’s albums in the early 1980s).
